Mohegan Tribe Supports Efforts of Uncas Health District - Donation to support Unintentional Injury Program - 5.7.07

Norwich – The Mohegan Tribe recently awarded $5,000 to the Uncas Health District.  The funding will support on-going unintentional injury programming in Norwich, Montville, Sprague, and Bozrah.  Specifically, the funding will support the efforts of Jody Rubino, program coordinator and coordinator of the Norwich Safe Communities Coalition.  The program is focused on addressing pedestrian and motor vehicle safety.  Recent Coalition activities have included the development of Safety Camp, an annual event at Backus Hospital where education and activities are offered to the public.  Several hundred families have attended the first three years of the event.  In partnership with Backus Hospital, the Norwich Fire Department, and New London County Safe Kids.  The Coalition also established monthly Child Safety Seat Inspection Stations at the Norwich Fire Department. 90% of the inspections have served Northern New London County Families and 70% have been Norwich residents.  Ms. Rubino also coordinated Walk To School Day at area schools in partnership with Federal Express.  Students receive pedestrian safety information while receiving “goodies” and tours of the FedEx truck, a fire truck, and other information.
