Cardio Health

Heart disease and stroke are, respectively, the number one and three causes of death in Connecticut and the nation.  In 2006, it is estimated that heart disease and stroke will cost the residents of Connecticut $4.7 billion dollars in medical expenses and lost productivity.

Two of the major independent risk factors for cardiovascular diseases are high blood pressure and high blood cholesterol; other risk factors for CVD include diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity and inadequate nutrition. Although, some risk factors such as sex (male or female), age, and family history cannot be changed, you can work to lower your risk of CVD by not smoking and modifying your physical activity and nutrition. A low-fat, low-calorie diet in combination with regular cardiovascular (aerobic) exercise will help you maintain a healthy Body Mass Index.

The City of Norwich has been designated as a HEARTsafe Community by the Connecticut Department
of Public Health.
